As
we know Albert Einstein is
one of the
best physicians in
the world. But
do you ever
think about one
thing that binds
him with some
of the world
magnates such as Thomas Edison,
Lee Kuan Yew
and Walt Disney?
Actually, they are
suffered dyslexia. What
is dyslexia? It
is the most
common learning difficulty
and reading disorder.
It always happens
to the children
especially among boys. Dyslexia
is not a
disease and it
is also their
fault to begin
with. People had
always recognized them
as stupid students
but they are
not. Actually, they
have their own
intelligence and talent.
But, the problem
is some people
say it is
not suitable for
them to be
educated in school
and follow the
mainstream lessons. So, lets
think about this
together. Should dyslexics
be in the
mainstream of education?
Totally, yes! This
is because we
need to give
them a chance
to learn and
achieve success in
their life.
As
we know, quality
for education in
Malaysia is very
high and it
is not appropriate
for dyslexics to
force themselves leave
mainstream education. But,
there is a
person that can
help them to
overcome their problems.
A qualified teacher
plays an important
role to help
them with their
studies in school
and teachers can
be their second
parents to motivate
them by giving
moral support so
that dyslexics will
not lose their
self-esteem because of
their learning difficulties.
The dyslexics are
not same with
the normal students.
So, teachers should
help them by
using another kind
of method for
instance, videos and
music are used
as learning tools.
It is better
for them to
listen than read.
But, do not
force them to
understand immediately. Maybe
after a few
months, they can
remember the words,
read and speak
fluently and spell
correctly. The teachers
can provide some
quizzes or games
and prepare a
lot of prizes
for what they
have achieved. With
this way, they
will be more
enthusiastic to read
and learn more about many
things, and improve
their knowledge.
In
addition, special class
or extra classes
can help them
to improve their
learning skills. The
nature of classes
are different. Some
are full time
and some are
part time. For
dyslexics, they need
some classes which
are exclusively for
them. So that,
they will be
more comfortable to
study without disturbance.
Educators need to
use other channels
to build up
the visual and
auditory channels so
that the learning
process can become
better for dyslexics.
It is essential
to have special
class with teachers
and trainers that
can use a
systematic approach. For
example, letters, simple
words, phrases and
sentences should be
introduced to the
dyslexics slowly, from
time to time.
Then, after the
first level is
finished, try to
get them into
mainstream syllabus or
subjects.
Many authorities
judge that it is not
suitable for dyslexics
learn in local
schools because they
will be mixed
together with the
other students. This
is the reason
why dyslexics do
not want to
go to school
because they feel
uncomfortable to study
with the normal
students. So, the
school authorities must
separate the students
according to their
needs. For example,
dyslexics need special
training to support
their mainstream lessons.
Teachers need to
pay more attention
on dyslexics. The
advantage from this,
dyslexics would be
able to follow
the mainstream curriculum
that is appropriate
for their age and ability.
So that, they
can do well
during their examination
as the normal
students can do.
Maybe, at first,
dyslexics will be
emotionally disturbed when
getting involved in
the mainstream education
system. But, this
feeling will disappear
from time to
time if they
get full support
from parents, teachers,
friends and also
school authorities. There
is another way to overcome
this problem. The
government should build
a private school
for them. So,
we can gather
all the students
that have suffered
from dyslexia in one school
and give the
best treatment and
education for two
years and then,
they can return
back to their
local school. “We
don’t want the
children to stay
with us for
a long time.
Maybe two years,
then they have
re-integrate with the
mainstream schools. The
goal is never
to have the
children stay with
us for long
and they need
to overcome their
problems before returning
back to the
local school”, said
Yoshimoto who has
set private school
for dyslexic children
in Hawaii.
The
conclusion is they
need a chance
to prove that
they can do
it and overcome
their problems. Actually,
many of them
have learning disabilities
but they are
nit stupid. In
fact, many of
them have succeed
in their life
and career. “Everybody
is a genius.
But, if you
judge a fish
by its ability
to climb a
tree it will
live its whole
life believing that
it is stupid”,
said Albert Einstein.
So, give them
opportunity to be in mainstream
of education. Who
knows, maybe individuals
with dyslexia can
become a prime
minister who runs
the country or
an authoritative figure
who is known
as a philosopher.
